ACTIVITY 1:
Read the following source and answer the questions.
The "Matric" Reality (Grade 12 in a township school, KwaZulu Natal)
Based on recent 2025/2026 reports, grade 12 learners are navigating extreme stress due to
matric exams, future anxiety (career/higher education), and, in some cases, infrastructure-
related disruptions to their education.
It is two weeks before the final prelim exams. The 18-year-old Mazi sleeps only 4 hours a
night. He feels the weight of his family’s expectations—he is the first to reach matric and is
expected to secure a university bursary. His school has experienced actions by teachers
protesting school funding, resulting in missed lessons and, recently, intense pressure to
complete the syllabus. Mazi has stopped talking to his friends because he believes they are a

distraction. His mother accused him of being disrespectful and antisocial, leading to a loud
argument at home. He suffers from chronic headaches, hair loss, and "butterflies". After
missing a crucial math camp, Mazi almost walks away from his studies, feeling that failure is
inevitable.
Recent studies suggest that in 2025, 408,675 learners didn't transition from Grade 10 to 12,
creating an intense environment for those who remain. In KwaZulu-Natal, funding crises
resulted in schools without basic operational resources, leaving learners like Mazi in the
crossfire and severely impacting their ability to prepare. Reports indicate that even after
finishing, the temptation of "pens down" celebrations poses new, dangerous safety risks for
matriculants. Mazi learned to map his conflict: 1. Intrapersonal (himself vs. anxiety) and 2.
Interpersonal (himself vs. mother). He identified that his avoidance of socializing was making
his mother think he was avoiding responsibility. Mazi spoke to his mother: "I feel overwhelmed
when I am interrupted because I am scared of failing. I would like us to create a study timetable
together so I can have time for family". Instead of shouting back at his peers who asked to copy
his notes. Mazi tried to avoid detrimental relationships. Mazi practiced asserting boundaries
politely but firmly, protecting his time. This was also preparing him to ‘adapt to change’ for the
new environment next year.
